Updates From the President

Tools for Student Success

400-08133471d.jpgAs technology continues to fundamentally change the way our students communicate, learn and interact with the college, it is important we continue to adapt and innovate. As part of our Strategic Transformation, Middlesex is actively seeking out technologies that help faculty and staff focus on promoting and supporting student success, retention and completion. Below is a sampling of the exciting technology initiatives that are under way at MCC.

In order to recruit and assist students through the admissions, financial aid, enrollment and advisement processes, we are searching for a more engaging and effective student portal. This portal will feature better tools to connect new students with inviting self-service options for students who prefer to communicate through a technologically mediated relationship. It will also provide Admissions and Advising staff with tools that enable them to track and communicate with current and prospective students. It also will equip our advisors with tools to identify and assist those students who need extra help and support. These technologies, in conjunction with micro messaging, social media, and mobile apps, are showing promise in connecting students and boosting retention – and will better help us help our students as we guide them on their path to success.

400-05911808In the classroom, we are greatly expanding the use of mobile technologies. Over the past year, several Learning Communities used iPads extensively in their coursework as part of a very successful pilot program. This fall, we will build on that success by rolling out iPads in “ENG 101” courses to engage students and enhance their learning experience. To keep up with the use of mobile technologies by faculty, staff and students, we will be overhauling our wireless network over the summer to provide better connectivity throughout our campuses.

The members of the FSA Technology Committee are partnering with the administration to provide information and understanding around which tools faculty and staff need to enhance learning environments. We are examining how to best get these tools into the hands of our educators – with the proper training and support they need to use them efficiently.

While we have made some meaningful progress using technology to promote and foster student success, our work is not done. This will mean making significant changes in how administrators, faculty and staff make decisions and how we work on a daily basis. By tapping into our collective intelligence and expertise, and by sharing innovative ideas and strategies, we can build solutions that will strengthen Middlesex for the future.

There is much that is still taking shape and this will be on ongoing journey. Hop on, it will be exciting!

Grants

Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant

MCC_MASkillsCapitalGrant_sp17Middlesex was recently awarded a $489,750 Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning environments and academic pathways for its Computer Science, Engineering Technology/CAD programs. The grant is part of the Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant Program, an initiative of Gov. Charlie Baker’s Workforce Skills Cabinet, which seeks to align education, workforce, and economic development strategies across the state.

MCC will use the grant to provide updated equipment – including new computers, work stations, projectors, wiring and router updates, new servers, and regular and 3D printers – in in five Computer Science and four Engineering/CAD classrooms on the Bedford and Lowell campuses.

“We are grateful for this funding that will allow us to improve our facilities with state-of-the-art equipment,” said Kathleen Sweeney, Dean of STEM. “Having access to optimal learning environments and equipment will ensure our graduates are better prepared to meet the needs of employers in high-demand STEM fields.”


AANAPISI Update

Asian American Connections Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The doors of the Asian American Connections Center officially opened  March 2nd. Located on the ground floor of the Cowan Center on the Lowell campus, the center is one of four strategies being implemented to help Asian-American students succeed through the support of the AANAPISI grant. This grant allows us to provide a holistic support system designed to improve student’s college-going experience, increase retention, graduation and transfer outcomes.

More than 100 students, staff, faculty and community partners turned out for the  ribbon-cutting ceremony. Speakers included President James Mabry, Dean of Students Pam Flaherty, Virak Uy, the new Director of the Asian American Advancement Program, State Sen. Eileen Donoghue, State Rep. (and alum) Rady Mom, MCC Trustee Bopha Malone, and Russell Panderes, representing Congresswoman Niki Tsongas. The Asian American Connections Center received a citation from Mom, as well as a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Tsongas.

Title III Grant Update

mcc_360_fin_colorMCC360 is a five-year, $2.2 million Title III grant to transform the student experience through self-service, data analytics, and integrated planning and advising. The various Title III committees continue to meet with vendors to strengthen student success. First-year Title III activities include procuring a student portal solution, completing RFRs for a customer-relationship management system (CRM) and eAdvising, and posting a grant-funded Data Analyst position. Both the revision of the MCC student portal and hiring of the Data Analyst are scheduled for the second year of the grant.


Academic Affairs

Academic, Career & Transfer Advising

On March 10th, an MCC staff panel presented “Complete College America: Building Collaborations Between Academic Advising and Academic Departments at Middlesex Community College” at the National Association for Academic Advising Region 1 Conference to an audience of close to 50 staff from a variety of regional institutions.

Region 1 includes all of the New England states, as well as New York state. It was a great opportunity to showcase the work we have been doing with regard to the development of our Academic Maps, Pathways Maps, and the advancement of our advising services. MCC panelists included Pat Bruno, Dean of Academic Advising, Transfer & Career Services; Bryan Wint, Director of Advising and Academic Pathways;  and Jane Fain, Transfer Counselor, Advising Liaison to Business Division.

The new Advising Institute completed its first training series on March 17th. Some 12 faculty members participated in this six-week series, which was very well received. This Institute provides in-depth training for new faculty advisors on topics such a career advising, transfer advising, financial aid, academic progress, registration processes, advising strategies, tools and resources. Congratulations to all the faculty who participated. Many thanks to the guest speakers who helped make this first Institute a great success, including Pat Bruno, Bryan Wint, Karen James, Melissa Welch, Gail Lucozzi and Deb Marsella.

A challenge for any college student is building their course schedule. To assist students with this process, Middlesex has invested in College Scheduler, a dynamic, web-based application that takes the guesswork out of finding courses, and simplifies the registration process with an easy-to-use, versatile (desktop & mobile) interface. CareerConCareer Services: Save the Date! CareerCon, a career-readiness workshop, will be held  from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 29th, in the Bedford Campus Center. This event will include:

It Takes a College Community
to Build a Successful FYE Program – Take 2

The FYE Program continues to grow, offereing IDS courses online, on weekends and  3-day accelerated, WinterSession, Late Start and summer QuickStart.

The mission of the “FYE Seminar” courses continues by being academically and socially enriching and engaging. With the ongoing support of Leadership & Engagement, our faculty, Peer Champions/Mentors and students continue to engage in a variety of activities that provide experiences in and out of the classroom. The following trips are just a few examples of recent engagement activities planned and coordinated by faculty, Peer Champions/Mentors and students: Museum of Fine Arts, Lazer Craze, Zip Lining, Gormley Café, Bedford Farms, Go Carting, Time Out Café, Blue Taleh Restaurant, Owl Diner, American Textile History Museum, and New England Quilt Museum. These engagement opportunities continue to contribute to persistence, retention and student success.

Lauren Ellis, Dianne Traynor, Lorraine DiBona Jones, Ashli Ree, Marja-Leena Bailey, Peter Maskaluk, Ben Adoo and Jo Mucci are presenting at the Teaching, Learning & Student Development Conference at Massasoit Community College on April 7th. Their topic: “Peer Champions in the FYE Classrooms: A High-Impact Model for Student Engagement and Success.”

Phyllis Gleason and Jo Mucci are also presenting “Enhancing First- to Second-Year Retention Rates: The First-Year Experience Course at Middlesex Community College,” at the Leading for Change Diversity Consortium Spring Summit, held at Bridgewater State University on March 23rd.


Office of Professional Development

The Office of Professional Development is requesting minigrant proposals from faculty who wish to adopt or develop Open Educational Resources (OER) for their summer or fall courses. This is intended to support any course not covered under OER funding opportunities currently available for STEM Pathway courses. Criminal Justice Department

Criminal Justice Professors Ron Brevard and Heloisa DaCunha coordinated a Civil Service Exam preparation session for Middlesex students on March 8. Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno and Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan did an outstanding job of presenting very valuable information to 50-55 Criminal Justice students about the police civil service exam and hiring process. The chiefs also conducted a realistic mock interview which was a real “eye opener” for the students. The students were very engaged during the entire event asking questions right up until the session ended.

Fashion Merchandising

The MAGIC (Men’s Apparel Guild in California) trade show attracts a wide variety fashion-related people from around the globe. For the last three years the college, through the BEP Division budget, has contributed to student travel to attend the show. This year, five students attended the event, and had a wonderful learning experience.

Fashion students also participated in a NY City experience, and field trips to ZAPPOS Corp. and the Peabody Essex Museum for the “WOW:World of Wearable Art” exhibit.


Human Services

Prof. Paulo Barrio attended the Chair Academy’s Northeast Leadership Development Institute (NELDI) at the UMASS Club March 9-10 for a mid-year event. He joined colleagues from the other 15 community colleges on Beacon Hill to work with the Massachusetts Community Colleges Executive Office (MCCEO) on Appreciative Inquiry; and understanding the legislative process, by meeting with state representatives, touring the State House, and discussing legislation with representatives from the Dept. of Higher Ed (Secretary James Peyser; Commissioner Carlos Santiago) and the community colleges (presidents of Holyoke, Berkshire, MassBay community colleges, and Springfield Tech, and others.)


Global Education

Student Receives State Department Fellowship

Global Education is very pleased to announce that Patrick Flynn, enrolled in Liberal Arts & Sciences, is the first MCC student to apply for and receive the prestigious  Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) Fellowship for 2017-18.

This fellowship, funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State, annually provides 75 American and 75 German professionals, between the ages of 18-24, the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries, studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural-immersion program.

The program consists of three phases:

  • Two months of intensive German-language training
  • Four months of classes in one’s academic or career field at a university, technical or professional school
  • Five-month internships in one’s career field

STEM

IT/Cybersecurity

In a world where everything is connected to the Internet, hacking leads the news, and kids are connecting to social media without understanding the consequences of putting their information online, Internet safety is an extremely important topic.

STEM Professor Ryan Fried recently took two of his IT Cybersecurity classes (“Computer Security I & II”) to two Lowell middle schools (21st Century School and Bartlett School) to talk about various Internet safety topics – including cyber bullying, social media, and passwords.

The MCC students came up with engaging activities to promote the characteristics of a strong password, and the consequences of posting pictures online (and how they are never erased). Fried’s students also created handouts for the middle schoolers and their parents outlining tips to increase online safety. Below is a photo from the “Computer Security II” presentation at the 21st Century School. Overall, it was an extremely rewarding experience for all involved.

Science

Science faculty are highly involved in the use of Supplemental Instruction (SI) in their classes. Iveta Dinbergs attended the inaugural Bi-Annual Northeast Supplemental Instruction (NERSI) Conference March 20 at MCC. Fellow science faculty members Jean Cremins and Beth Kelley co-presented a seminar titled, “The Symbiotic Relationship Between the Students, SI Leader, and Professor – How SI Transforms the Classroom.”

Sally Quast organized a group of STEM students to attend a screening of the movie “Hidden Figures” at Lowell Cinemas. Science Faculty Jean Cremins and Patricia Richard also accompanied the students. The movie depicts the struggles of black women obtaining equal respect and status in the male-dominated world of the NASA space program in 1961. It’s a true inspiration to all entering STEM fields. The trip was supported by Student Affairs.

Biotechnology

The Parenteral Drug Association that supports a student club on campus donated $3,000 for the development and printing of MCC Biotech T-shirts.

Pathways Center: The center trained new Peer Mentors in mid-February and is busy preparing for the April 23 Career Fair. More than 50 employers have signed up to participate in the Career Fair, and to day the job opportunities number more than 200. Pathways Center staff recently visited six classrooms to run Career Prep Workshops, and plan to do  many more. Please invite the Pathways Center to your classroom.


Enrollment

Admissions

Selective Admissions — Admission review for the selective admission programs of Dental Hygiene, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Radiologic Technology is in the final stages. Because the number of applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements far exceeds the number of available seats, applicants are scored in several categories, such as GPA related to credits taken, success in science courses, recommendation letters, history as an MCC student, related health and customer-service experience, and previous qualified applications. An applicant’s overall score determines acceptance.

We will be unable to admit many qualified applicants, and many students will be disappointed when decisions are received. The Admissions team will receive several questions from applicants in the weeks following the release of decisions. By using a completely objective method of rating applicants, these conversations, while difficult, will assure applicants that they have been fairly evaluated. During these conversations, we also offer suggestions as to how a student might improve any future applications.

Special activities — We have several activities scheduled with Lowell High School in the coming weeks.The MCC Hub, a one-stop networking event, is scheduled for March 30 and 31 at the high school. Spearheaded by Jillian Freitas-Haley and Jeff Tejada, we are taking our show on the road. This is a mini-open house, featuring representatives from Admissions, Advising, Disability Support, the Center for Health & Wellness, Academic Centers for Enrichment, and Student Financial Services. Several faculty members have committed to attend. We will also offer Financial Aid workshops twice each day.

We have ongoing presentations in Lowell High’s Careers in Health classes. Camille Brown has scheduled Sue McHale, Sandra Shapiro, Julie Breen, Jane Morrison and Apollon Bouzerdan to speak to the students each week regarding their respective health care fields, and what students need to be successful as an applicant and in the occupation.

We also have placement testing scheduled at LHS on April 11. We are inviting students who have applied to MCC for the fall and still need to test. And on April 12 we will host Lowell High School students on the MCC campus for a Pathways to Success Day. Students participating in this event will have been selected by the guidance department because they are a good fit for MCC. Lastly, we intend to hold On-the-Spot Registration at Lowell High in mid-May. These events are intended to remove the barriers that often keep students from completing the enrollment process.

We’ve also held events in other local high schools: Camille Brown held an On-the-Spot Admissions event at Greater Lowell Technical High School, and Jen Migliozzi conducted one at Wilmington High School. In addition, Jen visited classrooms at Nashoba Tech and Shawsheen Tech to promote our Dental Lab Tech program.

CPL Training — Alison Handy, Camille Brown and Marilynn Gallagan will be attending regional training for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) over the next few weeks at two of our sister community colleges. We are doing this to learn what options we can offer adult students who come to us with non-academic experience related to one of our programs of study.


Enrollment Management

Fall Registration – Fall 2017 registration started on March 15th and is open to all returning students. Letters and emails went out to 7,890 students with communications pertaining to their advisor assignments, general registration information, and key contacts. As the college continues to look at new scheduling models and opportunities, this fall will provide the opportunity to implement on-time registration for new students. On-Time registration has proven to enhance student success and will require that new students register prior to the first day of class. Late-start class scheduling will be provided to those new students who register after the traditional start of classes.

Communications – Enrollment Management (EM) has been actively identifying a variety of student populations for communications to promote and encourage summer and fall registrations. Working with Institutional Research, EM has started to refine populations and standardize the ability to access information for these communications. EM will continue to participate in the review and selection of vendors in the Title III grant, ultimately enhancing the ability to communicate with students through the student portal and CRM system.

The Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE) hosted the first Northeast Supplemental Instruction Conference on March 20. Theme of the conference was, “Transforming the Way Students Learn: Game Changing SI Strategies.” There were 83 participants in attendance from 10 community colleges, and 18 four-year colleges and universities, with representatives traveling from as far away as California, and as near as UMass Lowell. Eleven workshops were presented, on topics ranging from fostering student success and retention, supporting online and developmental courses, SI training highlights, and how SI transforms the classroom. Center for Leadership & Engagement

Advocacy Day 2017Middlesex students,  including student government officers, and Paul Sullivan Fellows from the “Leadership In Action” class, recently joined 600 other students from across the Commonwealth at the Statehouse in Boston to speak with representatives, and advocate for a high-quality, debt-free public higher education system for students and working families in our state.

The “Leadership In Action” class met with their mentors for the first time recently in an event held at the John Nesmith House. Thank you to our outstanding community partners who step up every year to support our students by providing them with guidance in their fields of interest.

MCC Foundation Scholarship Ceremony

On March 1, the MCC Foundation celebrated student success and thanked its generous scholarship donors during a ceremony on the Bedford Campus. The MCC Foundation awarded 53 scholarships to 47 MCC students totaling $48,450 in awards.

There were three newly established scholarships for 2017 presented at the ceremony: The Beauchemin Music Scholarship, established by Jennifer Aradhya in memory of her father; The MCC Performing Arts Scholarship, established with funds raised at the fall 2016  Murder Mystery event at Nesmith House; and The MCC Foundation Board of Directors Founders Award, presented to five students traveling on the China and Ireland International Education Fellowships and summer study-abroad programs.

Community Education and Training

College for Kids TimelessCollege for Kids summer enrollment begins! March 6th marked the official launch of the College for Kids Summer Program. To date we have more than 100 registrations collected. This year we have increased our marketing efforts and are outreaching to more public school systems in our region. Lauren Ellis, Program Manager, hand delivered CFK flyers to our Lowell public elementary schools and attended the Macaroni Kid Summer Camp & Kids Activities Fair, where she was able to connect with more than 500 families who attended. Our MCC Children’s Theater, taught by Performing Arts Chair Karen Oster, will be performing “Lion King Jr.” this year. Our Fashion Design program in Lowell and Lego Mindstorms program in Bedford will be returning, and we are looking forward to two new offerings this year: Exploring Acrylic Painting and Calling All Explorers. MILES_timeless_SP17Save the Date! The spring  Middlesex Institute for Lifelong Education for Seniors (MILES) Opening Session will take place on Thursday, March 23rd from 2 to 4pm in Café East, Campus Center, Building 8. The Key note speaker will be Stephen O’Connor, local author, who is a native of Lowell. Stephen has written a host of novels and short stories, and recently received the Helen Literary Award for his short story, “Work, Music and Love.” After our Opening Session,  MILES members will be able to enjoy a variety of classes into the month of May. Corporate Education and Training

CET offered CPR/ First Aid and Medical Administration Recertification classes for LifeLinks. Courses are conducted at MCC in order to provide employees exposure to taking classes in a college setting. We also offered a Workforce Training Fund Program information session on March 7,  on the Bedford Campus.

The Advanced Manufacturing Graduation was held March 29 on the Lowell campus. Graduating were 19 students who completed more than 350 hours of training. Thirteen students received Certificates in Electronics, and six earned Certificates in Machining.


Adult Learning Center/Links Programs

The GED is Back: As of January 1, 2017, candidates for the Massachusetts High School Equivalency Credential may choose one of two assessments – the GED test or the HiSET*– as a pathway to the credential.

The equivalency process was completely redesigned in 2014, and for the past three years the only test available in Massachusetts was the HiSET.

In order to better prepare students for the return of the GED as an additional option, staff from the Adult Learning Center in Bedford attended a regional training at Lowell’s Abisi Adult Education Center in February. Representatives from GED Testing Service presented on GED testing program features, and research-based classroom strategies, techniques, and tools that can be used. Staff attending this professional development opportunity included: Erin Callahan, Ann Hale, Kathy Innis, Allison Norton, Debra Szylvian and Georgia Whelton.


Marketing Communications

Share the Love Social Media Challenge: What do you LOVE about MCC?

That was the focus of the most recent social media challenge from the Office of Marketing Communications. We asked students, faculty, staff and community members to tell us what they love about MCC by using #myMCC on Twitter & Instagram, or by leaving a comment on our Facebook page. Marketing Communications has created a series of easy-to-use Microsoft Office templates. Available to everyone in the college community, templates enable individuals and departments to create good-looking, MCC-branded communications without having to submit job requests to Marketing Communications. All approved templates are available online, and already include the college logo and college colors. Some templates come in more than one design option, and each comes with a set of instructions. Government & Community Relations

Director of Compliance Alisa Chapman has been working with representatives from Academic & Student Affairs, Human Resources, Facilities, Public Safety and Public Affairs to establish a protocol for the reporting and resolution of communicable diseases within the MCC community. This procedure will ensure that the college has a comprehensive response when situations arise in which a community member is diagnosed with, or exposed to, a communicable disease that could possibly warrant a notification to all or part of the Middlesex community.

Title IX Coordinators from the Massachusetts community colleges will be attending a meeting and training on Friday, March 24th, at MCC. This meeting and training was coordinated by Alisa Chapman and Abby Vergados, and will feature a guest trainer from Domestic Violence Services Network, a local domestic-violence service provider. Amendments to the Clery Act require annual training for Title IX Coordinators. These meetings are held every other month and are designed to aid Title IX Coordinators in this obligation.

Director of Public Safety Daniel Martin attended a roll-out of the new NEMLEC STARS toolkit in March at Endicott College. This toolkit is designed to provide visitors with a comprehensive resource to aid them in their school crisis-management planning and response. The toolkit provides a basic plan for response to a variety of emergency situations and can easily be customized to a particular school. The toolkit contains samples and templates that can be used to jump-start a new school preparedness program or update one that is already in place. This is an invaluable tool that will help provide MCC with the most up-to-date emergency preparedness guidelines. MCC’s Campus Resource Officers also attended the toolkit roll-out event.

Lowell Campus Resource Office Tom Hickey and Bedford Campus Resource Officer Craig Naylor were guests at a recent Civil Service Test Exam Prep Class hosted by MCC’s Criminal Justice Department and Professor Ron Brevard. Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno and Arlington Police Chief Fred Ryan were presenters for the class.

Officer Hickey attended firearms recertification in March, and provided security for March college events at the Nesmith House and the Federal Building. Officer Naylor met with Bedford residents in a continuation to remedy issues of speeding on campus and on Springs Road.
