Updates From the President
On June 13, 2017, the MCC Board of Trustees passed a balanced interim budget for FY 18. This marks a huge turnaround in the budget situation we faced a year ago, and I want to thank leaders throughout the college who, along with our dedicated Board of Trustees, helped us reshape the fiscal landscape at MCC. I also want to thank our interim CFO Betty Ann Learned for helping us put in place open and transparent budget processes that will be continued by our new CFO, Frank Nocella. With our fiscal house coming into order, we can now focus on investing strategically in projects supporting student success.
Across this college, dedicated educational professionals are continuing to roll up their sleeves and do great work. As we build collaborative processes to promote entrepreneurial innovation, broad participation and a collective passion for student success will continue to emerge and be nurtured. Below, I want to highlight just a few outstanding examples of collaborative innovation – and more examples will be showcased in the submissions that follow.
At the cross-divisional Enrollment Working Group (EWG), active participation and energetic “discussions” flow as ideas are explored, and revised processes and policies to support student success are emerging. Through a free-flowing process of open participation and questioning, this group is doing some exciting work. They may get a bit raucous at times, but they get things done! Who could ask for more?
Creating a New-Student Orientation is an exciting collaboration between faculty leadership and Student Affairs, and is led by Rebecca Newell and Joanna Delmonico, with support from many areas of Student Affairs, CAO Colleen Cox and many others. They are planning some innovative interactive activities to engage new students and get them on the path to success.
Over the summer, we have started upgrading learning environments on campus through the innovative work undertaken by Resource Development, IT, the FSA Technology Committee, and Facilities. Susan Anderson and her team helped MCC secure a $475,000 MA Skills Capital Grant that is financing the rebuilding and upgrading of nine engineering and CAD classrooms. With advice and input from the FSA Technology Committee, and support from IT and Facilities, another 10 classrooms are getting extensive upgrades. We hope to keep this program moving forward as we upgrade and improve learning spaces across both campuses.
As we look forward to the start of the new academic year, many collaborative ventures are happening at MCC that will promote and support student success. At the Opening Forum, part of August 29’s Smart Start: Opening Day for Faculty/Staff, we will highlight more innovative projects underway at Middlesex. It will be great to have everyone back for Smart Start and I look forward to hearing about your summer adventures.

AANAPISI Update
New Intensive English Institute Classroom
The AANAPISI grant has been able to purchase and equip the new Intensive English Institute classroom with the latest technologies. The creation of this new classroom will allow MCC to support innovative pedagogical approaches that will help our ELL students to be ready for college-level courses. Construction has begun on the fourth floor of the Cowan Center. We anticipate the new classroom will be ready for the start of the fall semester.
Academic Centers for Enrichment English Conversations
The Lowell Writing Center is offering “English Conversation” sessions throughout the summer that are designed to help English language learners increase fluency and boost confidence in speaking English. Sessions are held in small groups and guided by a tutor, giving each student ample opportunity to speak and be heard. New AANAPISI Specialist
Cherry Lim is the new AANAPISI Specialist for the Asian American Student Advancement Program working in the Asian American Connections Center. She has most recently graduated from Boston College with her master’s degree in Higher Education Administration. While pursuing her degree, Cherry worked at Boston College as a graduate assistant where she helped plan and coordinate various projects. In her new role, she will be providing individualized student support – in the form of counseling, advising, and mentoring students through the Connections Center. Additionally, Cherry will assist in coordinating programs and services for the Asian American Student Advancement Program.
Title III Update
An MCC 360 Summit was held on Tuesday, June 20th in Café East Bedford. Members of the Title III MCC 360 Advisory Committee met to discuss the Requests for Proposals that were sent out to vendors on Wednesday, June 21st. The advisory committee reviewed the rubric for assessing vendor proposals and made suggestions on ways to improve it.
One change announced at the summit: Instead of submitting a single comprehensive RFP, three RFPs covering student portal and IPAS, CRM (with AANAPISI grant) and data analytics were discussed and the first RFP (student portal and IPAS) was submitted to vendors on June 21st. Eight vendors responded. The next step in the process is to review the documents submitted by each vendor and to complete the RFP rubric.

First Year Experience
Great Start for FYE QuickStart!
Summer QuickStart sections of FYE/IDS courses were fully enrolled and taught by faculty on campus and online. Students commented on how much they enjoyed the “QuickStart” model, and hoped more sections would be offered in the future. Students not only liked taking the IDS courses during QuickStart, but also felt that it was a great way to start, and for some, to continue their college experience at MCC. Students also explained how they plan on taking other courses during Summer QuickStart in the future.
“FYE/IDS 101,” a 3-day, on-campus course, was taught by Kendalle Jones; and Sarah Hahn taught the online section. Topics included, self-discovery and understanding oneself as a learner and as a college student, time management, and study strategies just to name a few.
Students taking the on-campus “FYE/IDS 101 (Freshman Seminar)” had an opportunity to meet folks from the college community, explored a variety of topics, and participated in sessions with the library staff, folks from ACE and other areas of the college. The students taking the “WEB IDS 101” course were also engaged and actively participating through great discussions and connecting through a variety of ways with Sarah and each other as they learned about the college community, its support services and resources. These connections have proven to be invaluable to students as they continue to take courses on campus and online.
Karen James, Coordinator of Career Planning and Placement, taught “IDS 106 Career Exploration” during Summer QuickStart, and was extremely pleased at how well she was able to get to know the students during the three days. The students were extremely participatory and had lots to say about their experiences at the college. They also provided thoughtful feedback through discussions and written reflections about how important it was to learn about career choices, life goals and planning.
After the class was over, one student wasted no time contacting Karen about another course she was going to be taking. Most importantly, the student had made a connection and knew who to contact for help and support.
Coming up in August … FYE/IDS courses are offered during the first two weeks in August. The August IDS courses are also fully enrolled, and include “FYE/IDS 101 (Freshman Seminar),” “IDS 103 Leadership,” “IDS 106 Career Exploration” and “IDS 108 Wellness.” Peer Champions/Mentors will also be attending the 3-day “IDS 101” classes in August to provide support to our new students as they transition to college life. It truly does take a village!

Fashion Merchandising
Ashli Ree visited Jose Cotacachi’s (a master weaver) studio in Peguche, Ecuador. He did a weaving demonstration and shared his experience as a successful artisan entrepreneur selling his products in Ecuador and exporting them as well. A dyer demonstrated natural dying processes using vegetables, volcanic ash, etc. Ree took field notes and collected other teaching resources to be used in her fashion courses, as well as business courses.
Ree also met with fashion faculty members from Framingham State University to update the articulation agreement and to receive feedback on the new course outcomes.

Art Department
Congratulations to Professor Yary Livan. Two of his artworks are now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institutions’ Sackler/Freer Gallery in Washington D.C., following a visit to his studio in Lowell by the Smithsonian Curator of Ceramics Louise Cort, and subsequent purchase by the Smithsonian. Yary’s elephant pot and vase, fired in MCC’s Cambodian wood fire kiln, were recently included in a show, titled “The Glazed Elephant,” set amidst historical Cambodian ceramics. The Sackler had arranged a series of public programs in early July to celebrate Yary’s accomplishments, including an artist’s talk in the Sackler Gallery, and ceramic workshops for adults and children at the District Clay Center, a new ceramics facility in Washington. In addition, Yary and Louise Cort were joined by Maggie Holtzburg of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, for a public conversation in the auditorium adjacent to the Sackler, followed by a reception with Cambodian food.
Music Department
Faculty Summer Activities
Orlando Cela, new MCC Music full-time faculty member, is the Music Director and Conductor of the Orchestra of the Governor’s School of North Carolina this summer. This school offers a 5.5 week summer residential program for intellectually and musically gifted high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The orchestra performs throughout the South.
Richard Chowenhill is the Associate Artistic Director of the Davis Shakespeare Ensemble this summer in California. This ensemble serves as a vital artistic resource for the people of Davis and the greater Sacramento region, and produces Shakespeare’s works, modern classics, new works inspired by the classics, and educational programs. Richard’s compositions are often featured.
Theater Department
On June 9th, the Theater Department received the Merrimack Regional Theater Donahue Award for Community Leadership. MCC’s Theater Program has long partnered with MRT to provide discounted tickets to MRT productions for students and staff at the college, but in the past two years the partnership has deepened. Students have been invited to participate in workshopping efforts for three plays: “Chill,” “Little Women Retold,” and Hurricane, The Musical.” Students take part by observing and working behind the scene, and in the case of “Hurricane” appearing on stage. This award has provided even more visibility for MCC’s Theater and Dance programs as we look forward to our new performing arts building in downtown Lowell.

The staff of the Admissions and Recruitment area have been hard at work this summer recruiting new students. Since recruitment is not always focused on the high school population, summertime is often a great opportunity to engage with our community. Recently, Jeff Tejada hosted a group of 20 young women from Girls Inc. on the Lowell campus, and he will also be the guest speaker at the Smart Hoops Community Basketball Program in Lawrence. The Smart Hoops program is an academic basketball academy designed to help Lawrence teens improve their basketball skills, stay active, and keep on track with their school work during the summer. Alison Handy had the opportunity to attend the MIT/Wellesley Upward Bound Program – Annual College Day fair at Wellesley College. Jennifer Migliozzi presented at the Wilmington Job Networkers meeting, and Jenna Engelsen, along with our partners in Community Education, represented Middlesex at the Bedford Summer Walk-About. There, Jenna was able to engage with our local community and even play a little Frisbee! Lastly, we have multiple presentations scheduled at the local career centers that will give us even more opportunities to connect with our adult-student population.
Additionally, we were pleased to once again host our Reserved Placement students on the Lowell campus on June 22nd. About 27 students will be participating in this partnership with UMass Lowell, which allows qualified students to enroll at Middlesex for the fall semester and transition to UMass in the spring. These are students who have met the admissions standards for UMass Lowell, but were not offered admission due to space constraints. After running this program last year, we learned that many students were so happy with Middlesex, they chose to enroll for the spring semester as well! Many of these students also took advantage of our Commonwealth Honors courses. We look forward to a continued partnership with our colleagues at UMass Lowell.
Summer is also a great time for professional development. The admissions counselors, along with staff from the Academic, Career & Transfer Center, had the opportunity to visit with our counterparts in Admissions at UMass Lowell. After an informative presentation and visit to their admissions offices, we were provided with a tour of their brand new, state-of-the-art Business facility, the Pulichino Tong Business Center. Visits like this provide us with up-to-date information that we can pass along to our students interested in transfer. Lastly, we would like to recognize Camille Brown for her participation in the Chair Academy. Camille had the opportunity, along with other MCC professional staff and faculty, to travel to Berkshire Community College for a week-long intensive leadership experience. This was only the beginning of her participation in Chair Academy and we wish her the best!

SUMMER 2017
Registration/Grades – Summer registration was busy this semester with our offering of five Summer sessions. With Sessions II, III and IV still underway, the Registrar’s Office is actively involved in ensuring the timely release of grades and transcripts. Faculty e-mails and a Newscaster posting have been made with the remaining due dates:
• Session II: Beginning July 10 – Final grades due August 11
• Session III: Beginning June 5 – Final grades due August 3
• Session IV: Beginning June 19 – Final grades due August 17
Student Evaluations – Information for Summer Evaluations was e-mailed to faculty and posted on Newscaster during the Summer. As sessions are completed, results are being compiled and will be distributed throughout August. Remaining pick-up and return dates for Sessions II, III and IV are as follows:

Graduation – During the summer, students continue to submit graduation applications for review and feedback. Final Summer graduation review and awarding will begin on August 21. Presently 253 applications have been reviewed.
Soft Docs Update -There are several departments that will be going live with Softdocs Etrieve Content on July 31st. Lena Mason from Softdocs will be on campus July 31st through August 2nd to assist the Finance, Purchasing, AR and AP departments with their implementation. HR, Payroll and Student Accounts are scheduled to go live this October. Eforms and workflows have been created and tested by the Technology Center. The college anticipates that a number of Enrollment Management and Finance Aid forms will be available to students by August, 2017. Many thanks to Ellen Ricca, Josie Gorman, Scott O’Neil and Al Keniston and their teams for helping to keep this initiative on track.
FALL 2017
Registration – Fall 2017 registration has been underway since February 2017. Students have been self-registering, meeting with Advisors and Counselors, visiting the Student Information Centers, and calling the 800 line to register. In early July, the Registration PIN holds for a select group of returning students with GPAs of 2.0 or higher were lifted, allowing these students the option of self-registering. Additionally, Advising continues to provide more walk-in options to students for Fall 2017 registration, and the Student Information Centers are actively involved in supporting this model.
Through collaboration with Advising, Admissions and Enrollment, Enrollment Management is supporting the promotion, communications, and registration for Walk-In Registration from August 14th through August 29th.
On-Time Registration and Late Start Classes – A major change for Fall 2017 will be the on-time registration policy for NEW students. New degree-seeking students who arrive for registration after August 28, will register for Late Start classes beginning in October. Late Start will offer a variety of courses for new students, and the October start will help ensure these late-arriving new students begin their classes on day-one.
New non-degree seeking students may register for classes after August 28. These students must register for on-campus classes before the class begins. For online classes, new students registering after August 28 must register before September 5.
Enrollment Exceptions – The Enrollment Exception Form available on the Student Information Center webpage and in the Centers has been revised for the fall. The option for ‘Late Admit’ has been removed. While faculty will still have the ability to ‘Late Admit’ a returning student, removing the option from the form should help reduce the number of requests instructors receive.
Communications – Through the efforts of the Enrollment Management Center and the Student Information Centers, Enrollment Management has focused on retention efforts through direct calls to students to encourage them to test and/or register for classes. Throughout June and July, a Summer postcard was mailed and more than 32,000 e-mails or texts were sent to targeted returning-student populations.
Fall 2017 Final Exam Schedule – The Fall 2017 Final Exam Schedule has been posted! With the assistance of Cheryl Ruiz and Katharina Lach, the website was modified to clarify the exam schedules for Day, Evening/Saturday and Online classes (see https://www.middlesex.mass.edu/finalexams/.) Please note that after final course cancellations, course additions, and student registrations, the Fall 2017 Exam Schedule will be updated to reflect added course sections, special program considerations, and space accommodations. Changes will always be made available through the website.

The Student Engagement team, in collaboration with the Orientation Implementation Committee, is feverishly preparing to welcome our newest incoming students at Orientation on August 30th and 31st. New-Student Orientation is a crucial on-boarding process that paves the way for student success. Hundreds of students are expected at this required program where they will join peers with a shared program of study. Participating faculty and staff will receive more information about their roles soon.

A Familiar Face in a New Role!
Student Support Services welcomed Pat Bruno to her new role as Associate Dean of Student Support Services on July 1st. Pat is stepping into the role long-held by Susan Woods, who will be retiring on August 31st. Most of you already know Pat from her leadership role in Academic Advising over the past nine years. Pat will be providing the leadership for the following programs and services: Disability Support Services, Personal Counseling and Consultation, TRIO Student Success, TRIO Student Achievement, Transition Program, and the ICE Program. In addition to her advising experience, Pat brings her extensive background as a manager and clinical social worker to this new role. Pat will be located on the Bedford campus. The second annual Massachusetts Community College Day at Fenway Park will take place on Thursday, September 28, 2017. The Red Sox will play the Houston Astros. Game time is at 7:10 pm. MCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are all welcome to join others from community colleges across the Commonwealth as Fenway Park promotes our community colleges. Celebrity Forum 2017 with David “Big Papi” Ortiz and WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche Raises Dollars for MCC Scholarships
On June 8, the Middlesex Community College Foundation’s 2017 Celebrity Forum hosted Red Sox legend David Ortiz, aka Big Papi. For the event, Ortiz was interviewed by award-winning sports anchor Dan Roche and the Lowell Memorial Auditorium was filled with sponsors and ticket buyers. This well-admired community event is a major fundraiser for MCC scholarships.
The MCC Foundation opened the program with a scholarship awards ceremony, honoring 18 students who were presented with scholarships that ranged from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Proceeds also benefit MCC Foundation scholarships awarded annually during a campus ceremony each March. Special thanks are extended to the Forum’s sponsors and donors.
Our thanks are also extended to everyone who purchased a ticket to this event. It was a very successful event filled with much excitement – truly a great night for MCC and a great night for our greater community!

Adult Learning Center
The Adult Learning Center (ALC) and the Links Program are proud to highlight two stellar students from the 2016-2017 academic year: Montse Pou and Ashraf Muguluma. Both students began in the ALC to prepare for the high school equivalency exam. They each passed the HiSET® and then enrolled in Links, MCC’s transition-to-college program, where they excelled. During this past spring semester, Ms. Pou and Mr. Muguluma passed the “Preparation for College Math” course and were able to enroll in and pass the “Accelerated Statistics” course as well. To recognize their achievements, President James Mabry awarded each student one, 3-credit tuition waiver for the 2017-2018 academic year. The Links Program gives special thanks to President Mabry for his continued support of our students. Ms. Pou will continue her academic work this fall while also working as a Ramp-Up Math tutor. Mr. Muguluma is continuing his academic work this summer with an interest in pursuing studies in the Biotechnology Program.
Corporate Education & Training
Meetings are taking place over the summer on the Department of Labor Mass AMTC Tech Hire Grant that was recently awarded to Mount Wachusett Community College. Middlesex, Northern Essex and North Shore community colleges are sub-recipients on the grant. Middlesex is offering a Quality training program in July 2017. MCC will be offering Electronic Technician, and Machining training in 2017.
- Offered CPR, First Aid, Medical Administration Recertification, Urban Youth First Aid/CPR trainings along with credit course “Developmental Disabilities” for LifeLinks. The courses are conducted at MCC in order to provide employees exposure to taking classes in a college setting.
- Delivered customized “Financial Fundamentals” and “Project Management” training at Enterprise Bank in Lowell.
- Offered “Effective Communication Skills” training at Minuteman Senior Services in Bedford.
Community Education & Training
Please join us in congratulating Lauren Ellis who successfully completed MCC’s Leadership Academy. Lauren received her Graduate Certificate in recognition of successful completion of the Chair Academy for Leadership and Development on June 9, 2017. The Chair Academy provided Lauren with a constructive learning community to further develop her personal and professional objectives, while building a growth plan for the future. She was able to build upon her strengths and become a more productive, better adjusted, healthier professional.

Four students successfully completed and graduated May, 2017 with a Certificate in Technical Writing. Our 120-hour program prepares student for a career in tech writing and editing.
Community Education graduated 13 students from our Pharmacy Technician program that took place during spring semester. The Pharmacy Technician program includes 60 in-class hours, along with an 80-hour externship with a CVS pharmacy. One of our students is now working part-time at CVS Pharmacy in Acton.
There is lots of activity on our Lowell and Bedford campuses this month with the start of our College for Kids programs. Approximately 470 children, ages 8 -15, will be on campus through August 17. July programs include “Fashion Design,” “Children’s Theatre” with Karen Oster, “Veterinary Program,” “Acrylic Painting,” “Legomindstorms,” and so much more!
Community Education offered an off-campus “Equipment Calibration” certificate course at MASY BioTech Services in Pepperell. MCC Biotech Faculty Patricia Richard taught a 10-hour “Equipment Calibration” course for 17 students that included both MCC biotech students and MASY employees. Community Education will be offering an off-campus “Equipment Validation” course at MASY BioServices in the fall.
Community Education staffed the MCC table at three summer community events: The June 17 and July 9 Lowell Summer Music Series concerts; and June 22 Town of Bedford Walk-About.
M.I.L.E.S. – Do you have a passion or expertise that you would like to share with the community? The Middlesex Institute for Life Long Learning for Seniors (M.I.L.E.S) provides a rich learning environment for active older adults. If you would like to volunteer to lead a two-hour workshop (2-4 pm) this fall or spring 2018, please email Lauren Ellis, Program Manager, at ellisl@middlesex.mass.edu. Facilities
With the arrival of summer and the new fiscal year, we have moved on to what will be another busy season. Facilities focuses on projects – ongoing and summer projects – and planning and renovation construction projects. The work done this summer across both campuses is wide ranging, including custodial projects, building consolidations for the summer hours, installing additional user-friendly water-filling stations, the Mass re-lamping project converting to energy efficient LED lights, and installation of electric hand dryers. All of these projects save energy, reduce the colleges carbon foot print and reduce operational costs.
The Boston & Maine Academics Arts Center renovation project is progressing nicely.

Director of Compliance/Title IX Coordinator Alisa Chapman and Director of Public Safety Daniel Martin are partnering with Bedford Youth & Family Services to assist in developing specialized bystander intervention training. The training is open to all Bedford area community members, including members of the MCC community. The program has over 20 participants and looks to be a great opportunity to educate the community at large.
Alisa Chapman attended the Jane Doe Inc. Prevention Summit: Transforming Communities on April 27th. The day was filled with training and resources to work with victims of sexual violence, dating & domestic violence and discrimination in more effective and inclusive ways. The information and resources will be incorporated into existing policies and procedures here at MCC.
Alisa Chapman, Abby Vergados and Patrick Cook continue to process CORI/SORI checks for students in the Academy of Health Professions. These checks are necessary for all students entering into a clinical field placement.
Abby Vergados has taken over the ticket sales for the 2017 MCC Night at the Spinners. Tickets are available through the college website (www.middlesex.mass.edu/spinners) or may be ordered/picked up in person by visiting Abby on the Bedford Campus or Mandy Vozzo/Carmen Pagan in Lowell.
Dan Martin attended the monthly meeting of the NEMLEC STARS team. During these meetings, the STARS team debrief on recent incidents and explore new ideas on how to best serve school communities. The STARS team is on-call to work with students, faculty and staff after incidents, including, but not limited to, bomb threats, homicides, student-deaths, and enhanced lockdown situations.
Dan Martin, Executive Director Patrick Cook, and Lowell Campus Resource Officer Tom Hickey conducted a Run, Hide, Fight Active Shooter Training sessions for MILES participants. This was by specific request from MILES members after the success of the last training session offered.
Dan Martin, Patrick Cook, Officer Hickey and Bedford Campus Resource Officer Craig Naylor also conducted Active Shooter Safety Training at Gillette Stadium for the Massachusetts Facilities Management Association (MAFMA). During the course of the training, Officer Naylor was called in to assist with a medical call for one of the attendants.
Patrick Cook, Dan Martin, Alisa Chapman, Abby Vergados, CRO Hickey and CRO Naylor attended the 2017 Workplace Safety Summit put on by D.A. Marian Ryan’s office and held at MCC. This valuable training explored signs of and tips for handling situations of workplace violence, and the importance of reporting what you see to appropriate personnel.
