Updates From the President
I recently returned from leading an accreditation site visit team at a neighboring community college for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)/ Commission of Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE). Last year, I was asked by the president of CIHE, our regional accreditation agency, to lead a team of eight educational professionals to visit and report on how this college meets the nine new standards for accreditation. It was an excellent opportunity become familiar with these new standards.
Site visits are intensive, as you work on tight deadlines, trying to learn about and get a feel for an institution in a very short period of time. Throughout the visit, as I gained insight into how this college worked, it was impossible not to reflect on my home institution. What was happening was what I had hoped for: I was learning more about the best things community colleges can do, and thinking about ways to do them even better.
The whole exercise reminded me of the many enriching co-curricular activities we offer our students, and how this helps them learn and grow through new experiences and reflective exercises. Everything from leading the volleyball team to victory, to traveling abroad, to meeting state and local leaders helps our students gain positive experiences that help them grow as individuals. Perspective is wonderful and exceedingly useful, and I found the deep dive into the structure and culture of another college a beneficial experience that allowed me to reflect on the strength and successes I see every day here at Middlesex.
Another recent highlight was last Saturday’s Fall Open House. It was great to see students, faculty, deans and staff welcome our future students and their families to MCC. I especially enjoyed watching the community enjoy our beautiful Bedford campus on such a great fall day – the Bedford Quad was bustling. These touchpoints with our students are so meaningful and I am grateful to have such a collaborative campus community that supports our students at every stage of their journey at Middlesex.

AANAPISI Grant Update
Meet Our New Graduate Fellows
The Program for Asian American Student Advancement (PAASA) welcomes two new graduate fellows, Argyro Armstrong and Diana Santana, to the team. Both fellows will be working in the Asian American Connections Center on the MCC Lowell Campus.
Argyro Armstrong has several years of experience as an adjunct professor of English at Fitchburg State University and UMass Lowell. She received her BA and MA in English and International Affairs. Argyro teaches First Year Seminar (honors) at UMass Lowell and is a teaching assistant in the College of Education, providing writing support to doctoral students. Argyro is currently pursuing her PhD in Leadership in Education at UMass Lowell, focusing on English Language Learner students. In her new role, she will be assisting PAASA staff in mentoring students, as well as working to coordinate and enhance our College Financial Literacy Workshops.
Diana Santana currently works as a graduate assistant in the Office of Multicultural Affairs at UMass Lowell where she provides program support and coaches’ students in leadership development. Diana received her AA in Communications from MCC and her BA from UMass Lowell in Sociology and Gender Studies. Currently she is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Community Social Psychology. As a graduate fellow she will be assisting PAASA staff in mentoring students and coordinating PAASA events.
Asian American Family Night
Over 50 participants attended the first Asian American Student Family Night event on October 12. The event was hosted by the Program for Asian American Student Advancement (PAASA).
Students and their families had an opportunity to learn about the wide range of campus resources, including Financial Aid, Personal Counseling, Student Accounts, Student Life and the Asian American Connections Center. Participants enjoyed a Cambodian dinner and the “Blessing” dance performance by the Angkor Dance Troupe. The program assists students and their families in transitioning to college by providing them with the opportunity to meet and build connections with staff and current MCC students.
MCC 360 Update
In September, MCC purchased a new-student product, and integrated planning and advising solution known as Navigate as part of the Title III Grant, MCC360 Success from the Start: The Path to Completion. On November 8th, EAB will be conducting demonstrations of its Navigate platform. Navigate consists of four key features: Guided Onboarding, Smart Academic Planning, 360 Advisor Dashboard, and Actionable Administrator Views. Demonstrations will be held in Café East on the Bedford campus at 9 am and again at 12:45 pm. This new and exciting product will help our students bring guided pathways on to their road to success.
In addition, MCC will be having a site visit from the Title III External Evaluators, Kathe German and Phil Sbaretta. The site visit will be Thursday, Oct 26th on the Lowell campus.

Business – Entrepreneurship
DifferenceMaker@MCC kicked off with its first workshop focusing on idea generation and evaluating opportunities. Several students from across the school (six from Engineering!) convened with professors Sharma and Hargis.
Student Randy Nguyen volunteered at the first Stoklosa Pop Up Shop held at Mill No. 5 in Lowell. This student-led social enterprise sells student and faculty created goods. All profits benefit the Stoklosa After School Program, Stoklosa’s sister school in Cambodia, and a scholarship fund for future Stoklosa MCC students.
Fashion Merchandising
Students visited the New England Quilt Museum with Ashli Ree for a scavenger hunt. After completing it in small groups, the students had lunch at Jimmy John’s in downtown Lowell.
Students also visited the New England Apparel Club wholesale show in Royal Plaza Trade Center with students from Framingham State University. They observed how buyers and vendors work in the industry. In addition, Ree worked with local business owners and designers for internship and career opportunities for the students.
Hospitality and Culinary Arts
Culinary Arts classes are off to a great start at their new location, the UTEC Commercial Kitchen in Lowell. Students have been preparing some delicious recipes using brand new equipment in this state-of-the-art kitchen in the heart of downtown Lowell.
Professor Kim Morrissey’s Hospitality Management class toured the UML Inn and Conference Center on October 3rd. Students were given a behind-the-scenes look at hotel operations, and also had the opportunity to meet with several of the hotel’s managers.
Humanities
Arts, Humanities & World Language Institute
November concerts in A World of Music Concert Series in the Concert Hall, in Bedford
- Friday, November 3 at 8 pm. The Dylan Jack Quartet. This ensemble creates a unique blend of modern music inspired by 20th, and 21st century composers of both “classical” and “jazz.” Percussionist Dylan Jack is a 2008 graduate of MCC, where he majored in music, and he will be joined by Todd Brunel, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Hofbauer, guitar and Anthony Leva, bass.
- Sunday, November 12 at 3 pm. The noted Ukrainian born pianist Anastasia Seifetdinova will present a piano recital including the Sonata mélancolique by Ignaz Moscheles, Variations sérieuses by Felix Mendelssohn, Papillons by Robert Schumann and the fiery Waldstein Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven.
- Tuesday, November 28 at 12:30 pm. There will be a performance which explores LGBT issues through music from the 1600’s until today on. MCC faculty member Anna Ward, soprano, will be joined by Rodolfo Girón, countertenor, Drew Ricciardi, viola, and Elaine Rombola, piano, to perform works by Claudio Monteverdi, George Frideric Handel, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Juliana Hall and Dominick DiOrio.
Communications
This summer, Rick Pozniak, Adjunct, Communications Department, Social Sciences, served as a judge for 2017 Newspaper of the Year, awarded by the New England Newspaper and Press Association. He was also interviewed by CNN on the public relations problems being experienced by The White House.
STEM
IT/Cybersecurity
Ryan Fried is working with students to prepare presentations to 7th and 8th graders in the Bartlett School in Lowell on Internet safety. The IT faculty member also has formed a relationship with BNMC, a local IT government contractor. BNMC staff were brought to campus for a tour, and staffers will be speakers in his fall classes. The company will also provide a summer internship for an IT student.
Professor Fried has also developed Open Educational Resources for his “Introduction to Computer Network Security” (NST 281) course, which saves students $200 compared to previous sections of the course.
Science
Patricia Richard attended the 18th Annual National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science (NCCSTS) Conference in Buffalo, NY, which provided training and resources for teaching case studies in science and problem-based learning.
Students Tayaba Naz, Anant Verma and Jessica Wright-Lichter and faculty advisor Patricia Richard attended the ISPE Student Development Committee Strategic Planning Meeting in Waltham. The group discussed ways to assist other community colleges in creating their own student chapters.
Patricia Richard and former REU student Jessica Wright-Lichter attended recent talks at Tufts University by MCC students Timothy Cooney and Tayaba Naz. Timothy’s REU experience included a study of Cooper’s hawks, and Tayaba studied Interstitial Telomeres.
STEM faculty members Iveta Dinbergs and Patricia Richard are contributing to a handbook, titled “Best Practices for Intersession Teaching.”
Engineering
Michele Stein met at Northeastern University prior to the fall semester to plan the upcoming year events for the S-Power Engineering grant. The group is hoping to encourage more STEM students in the energy research field.
Enrollment
Enrollment Management
Registration Highlights – Wintersession 2018 & Spring 2018
Wintersession and Spring registration opened on October 12. Fall 2017 students received letters informing them of Spring 2018 registration and the steps necessary to enroll. On the first day of registration, 417 course enrollments had occurred.
Wintersession continues to be a popular accelerated option for students from MCC and other colleges. Wintersession postcards are being mailed to potential students in October to create a greater awareness of the course offerings. Grading
Mid-term deficiency grading opened Wednesday, October 18th. Faculty are only required to enter deficiency grades for students performing at the “D” or “F” grade level, or who are otherwise in danger of failing your course. Mid-term deficiency grades are entered through Self-Service Banner (MiddleNet), and must be entered by 5 pm on Friday, October 27. Midterm grading for Late Start sections will be open Wednesday, November 1st through Friday November 10th.
Student Evaluations
AHP1 faculty members started picking up their evaluations on October 23.
Regular and late start full- and part-time student evaluations will be ready for pick up on November 28. More information on locations will be coming in November through email and on NewsCaster.
Online Graduation Application
Students can now apply for both Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 graduation through the online graduation application. This can be accessed when students log into the portal by selecting “Apply for Graduation” in the portal menu. With the online option and portal location, students have been applying for graduation earlier and with greater ease.
Transcripting Project
As part of the statewide MassTransfer initiative, MCC has been working on certifying the state A2B Pathways on our transcript. Lisa Gibson, Evelin Ovalles and Vanessa Ruiz are building the A2B Pathways for students to view how their coursework will transfer on from Middlesex to the Massachusetts state colleges and universities. The pathways are built through the what-if analysis in Degreeworks, and will also be transcribed on to an additional page on the students’ transcripts. Josephine Gorman and Bud Hall are working on certifying the A2B Pathways on the additional page of the MCC transcript. More information on MassTransfer and the A2B Pathways can be found at:

Electronic Forms
Enrollment Management and the Technology Center designed, created and published two Enrollment Management electronic forms, also known as eForms, onto the student portal. Students can now access two eForms, the ADM High School Certification Form and the ADM In-State Tuition Eligibility Form at any time and at their convenience. Enrollment Management Center staff can retrieve these eForms on their portal, process them, and have the student hold type(s) removed virtually on the same day. More self-service student eForms will be published and made available to students throughout the following semesters. The focus will be on designing and creating eForms for Admissions and Financial Aid to improve the student’s experience and assist them with their pathway to success.

Marilyn Yeo from Personal Counseling and Consultation Services, offered two lunchtime Academic Survival Skills workshops for adult students at Middlesex. The workshops, presented by Noreen McGinness Olson, Director of Academic Support Programs, were held in September on both campuses, and covered a variety of study skills and strategies. Students learned about important resources at the college and had the opportunity to connect with other nontraditional students – something they appreciated and enjoyed. Monthly lunchtime workshops on a variety of topics will be offered throughout the year.

Barbara began her career at MCC in 1999, working in many different roles at The CareerPlace. Barbara’s most recent position there was Program Coordinator, where she supervised the operation of grant-funded programs. Corporate Education and Training
Corporate Education and Training delivered or will be delivering:
- Noncredit advanced manufacturing training program through a Mass AMTC Tech Hire Grant. The program is designed to prepare unemployed or underemployed for entry-level positions in either electronics or machining. The students take their foundational courses at MCC’s Lowell campus and manufacturing training at Greater Lowell Technical High School. The program ends in April 2018 with the students taking over 400 hours of training.
- Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing Training at Pace Industries in Billerica.
- Medical Administration Recertification, First Aid, and CPR trainings for LifeLinks. The courses are conducted at MCC in order to provide employees exposure to taking classes in a college setting.
- Reflective Supervision training for CTI at the James Houlares Early Learning Center.
- Group Leader Training at Mack Technologies in Westford. Training will include Effective Communication Skills, Lean Manufacturing Principles, Effective Problem Solving, and Computer Training.
- Corporate Education and Training collaborated with Resource Development to complete and submit a Workforce Training Fund Grant for Flir in Billerica that was approved. Training will include Team Building, Negotiation Skills, and Business Conversation Skills.
Community Education and Training
The fall MILES Opening Session was a great success! Local artist Cathy McLaurin was the keynote speaker on October 4th. Cathy is Director of Special Projects at the Elizabeth A. Beland Gallery and Director at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence. There were 75-80 MILES members in attendance, both new and returning members. MILES classes began on October 5th and will run through November 16. We are planning for the spring 2018 MILES Opening Session, so mark your calendar for March 21st, Café East at 2pm. Thank you to our instructor volunteers! If you are ever interested in volunteering for our MILES program, please contact Community Education & Training. Share your passion with the community!
It is not too late to register for our noncredit course offerings in the personal enrichment area. There is still time to sign up for cooking classes at the United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) in Lowell. Come and learn to cook Basic Italian Cuisine on November 16th from 3 t0 6 pm. During the month of October our newly created Customer Service Certification Program ran with two sections. Employees from Lowell General Hospital and the Career Center of Lowell participated. Other October open enrollment classes included WordPress for Websites, Management Certificate Program, Social Media Certificate, Human Resource Essentials, Microsoft Excel Certificate, Business Computer Applications, and Intro to Cyber Security for Managers.
Nineteen (19) registered dental hygienists successfully completed MCC’s local anesthesia certification program on October 9. Thank you to our Dental Hygiene division/faculty and our Facilities crew for all your hard work in making this a successful program.

Homeland Security
Homeland Security Program Executive Director Terry Downes made three recent radio appearances, two on WBZ News radio in Boston, the third on WCAP Radio, Lowell. On WBZ, he appeared live for two hours of evening conversation regarding the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose. He was also interviewed by WBZ’s News Department providing analysis and discussion following the mass shooting at the Las Vegas Harvest Music Festival, that left 58 people dead and 546 injured. On WCAP, he appeared in a live afternoon drive-time broadcast providing analysis and discussion of the Las Vegas mass shooting.
On October 3, Downes addressed some 200 educators and law enforcement professionals at a K-12 School Safety Summit in Marlborough, providing an overview of recent terror attacks in North America and Europe, and outlining recent cyber-attacks directed against school systems around the U.S.

NCMPR – District 1 Communicator of the Year
Marketing Communications Director Jennifer Aradhya has been named 2017 District 1 Communicator of the Year by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR), the premiere organization for two-year college communications professionals.
NCMPR’s prestigious Communicator of the Year Award recognizes a two-year college marketing, public relations or communications professional who demonstrates leadership in the area of college communications and marketing. Aradhya was officially given the award at the recent NCMPR District 1 Conference, held in Philadelphia, Penn.
Government & Community Relations
Director of Compliance/Title IX Coordinator Alisa Chapman and many representatives from across the campus are participating in an ADA Strategic Compliance Assessment with our state partners at DCAMM as well as outside consultants. This process started in June and is expected to last through the fall. These assessments evaluate MCC’s physical spaces, as well as our policies, procedures and programs. The consultants will be conducting a community meeting open to the MCC community. This will take place at the beginning of November. Please see Newcaster for the meeting announcement.
Alisa Chapman hosted over 20 of her colleagues from the community colleges on October 13th at the Meeting House. The meeting was for Title IX Coordinators and investigators. The meeting focused around the latest Title IX guidance from the Federal Department of Education, resource and information sharing, and bystander intervention training.
On October 26th, Alisa Chapman will be conducting a training Active Bystander Training- Intervention for an Inclusive Community. This training is provided in partnership with Bedford Embraces Diversity and provides resources for confronting behavior or language that is inappropriate, offensive harassing, abusive or dangerous. Alisa is available to conduct this training for MCC faculty and staff at department or area meetings. Dates for student trainings will be announced in November.

For employees, those notifications included: The Annual Safety & Security Report, MA Domestic Violence Leave Law, Sexual Harassment & Sexual Violence policies, the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act, and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. For students, those notifications included: The Annual Safety & Security Report, Sexual Harassment & Sexual Violence policies, the Availability of Financial Aid, Notice of Student Financial Aid penalties for Drug Law Violations, Voter registration, Privacy of Student Records, the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act, MA General Law on Hazing, peer-to-peer file sharing and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. Director of Public Safety Daniel Martin attended the monthly meeting of the NEMLEC STARS team, training with X-ray machines, metal detectors, and body wands. These meetings help keep team members in touch with the most up-to-date methods of public safety.
Officers Tom Hickey and Craig Naylor, with the help of Dan Martin, Pat Cook, and the Lowell and Bedford police departments, took part in the national “Coffee with a Cop” campaign, offering students the chance to ask questions and have some casual conversation with members of our public safety team.
Lowell Police Officer Tom Hickey worked with staff from the Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School to obtain restraining orders after numerous infractions/reports of disorderly conduct. Officer Hickey also conducted extensive video surveillance review to obtain information regarding two separate investigations.
Bedford Police Officer Craig Naylor took part in the “It Can Wait” campaign, promoting the consequences of texting while driving. Officer Naylor was stationed on the Bedford Quad, where a wrecked vehicle stood as a testament to texting and driving. Officer Naylor also conducted a welcoming session for the Transition Program on Cyber Safety/Cyber Bullying.
